Follow Your Nose
At Mello Cannabis, we believe that there’s a better way to choose cannabis and it all begins with you and your first impressions. Simply, follow your nose. Because science tells us that the cannabis that smells best to you is the cannabis that is best for you. Like choosing a fine wine, premium coffee, or the best cigars, aroma is the way cannabis has been chosen by growers and experts for thousands of years and it’s why we categorize our flower into six Mello Aroma Profiles. Cheese, Fruit, Gas, Pine, Purple, and Dessert.
At Mello Farms our Director of cultivation, Tyler McCain, is one of the industry leaders rejecting the current industry obsession with chasing the highest THC levels and instead following thousands of years of expertise and tradition by developing genetics based on aroma. Tyler understands and nurtures the hundreds of other biochemicals that work in harmony to create an entourage of mood and body effects that make premium cannabis so beneficial to health and well-being.
Find Your Mello Level
At Mello Farms, we cultivate cannabis plants with varying THC levels to cater to a wide range of consumers’ needs. Our premium, craft cannabis is grown to three THC levels: Easy, Advanced, and Expert, because scientific studies have proven that cannabinoids can actually trigger our receptors effectively with THC levels as low as 8-12%. This means that the differences between a 12% strain and a 30% strain might not be as significant as we once thought and for those who are new to cannabis, smoking high-THC strains can sometimes lead to discomfort or paranoia, and that’s definitely not the experience we want for newcomers!
In an attempt to offer our customers a way to easily navigate what can be an overwhelming number of choices available now. Our packaging uses icons you would see on the ski slopes: green for “easy strains” with THC levels under 20% for new or occasional users, a blue square indicates strains with 21% to 25% THC for experienced users, and a black diamond is for strains with 26% THC and above for high-tolerance and medicinal users. Regardless of THC content, all Mello cannabis flower is rich in cannabinoids, terpenes, and biochemicals that contribute to the plant’s vibrant colors, aromas, and wonderful entourage effects.
Cannabis Mythbusting with Mello Cannabis
Cannabis has long been a friend to those who were willing to buck current laws and enjoy its medical and recreational benefits. Now, we have many new cannabis users and many who are reconsidering cannabis use as a healthy alternative to alcohol and opioids. We want to help dispel some myths that have developed with the advent of legalization to create a healthier environment for new and former cannabis users to find their own relationship with this magical flower.
Some of the prime myths that Mello wants to help dispel are:
Myth: THC percent shows the quality of the cannabis.
No, quality of flower is a result of the combination of THC, other cannabinoids, terpenes and many other minor but effective compounds within cannabis. In fact, high THC content can be a turn-off to many users as it can cause a quick psychoactive effect that is uncomfortable.
Myth: Sativa and Indica and hybrid are a good way to categorize cannabis flower for users to know the effects they should expect.
No, there is no genetic difference between Sativa, Indica and Hybrid varieties. These distinctions made sense when they were applied to landrace strains, which grow in particular climates. But today virtually all varieties on the market are hybrids.
Myth: Once you find a “strain” you like, you can expect to be getting the same type of cannabis flower if it has that same “strain” name.
No, first, there are actually no “strains” in cannabis. That term; “strain”, applies to other types of biological phenomena, but not plants. The different “strains” are actually different varieties, the same as roses or tulips which are cultivated for different characteristics, which are called cultivars or cultivated varietie”. Further, most black market and legal retail outlets for cannabis who label their cultivars by “strain” names, are actually growing cannabis from seeds of that “strain” or cultivar. And the seeds are no more a replica of the “parents” than are children replicas of their parents. The cultivars you buy are typically children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, great-grandchildren of the original “strain” or cultivar. That is why when you buy a cultivar from a store and then buy the same cultivar again it is often very different. Because it is different. The only way to be certain that you are buying the actual cultivar is if it is from a clone of the original cultivar bred by the breeder of that cultivar. And this is rare in today’s marketplace.
Myth: The best way to decide which cannabis cultivar to purchase, is to check its THC content.
No, The THC content will only give you an understanding of the psychoactive intensity of the flower. And if it’s too high, you may find you experience a period of discomfort and unpleasant anxiety as the THC impact happens very abruptly. But cannabis is composed of over 500 molecular compounds, including cannabinoids, non-cannabinoid phenols, terpenes, alkaloids, flavonoids, etc. In fact, cannabis with lower THC content, with high terpene presence and heavily imbued with many other unique compounds, are able to produce the entourage effect enjoyed and sought by consumers.
Myth: Consumers can rely on certified lab reports showing THC, terpenes, and other cannabinoids to find what kind of cannabis they enjoy the most.
No, lab reports are notoriously inaccurate. This is the current state of the science, equipment, techniques, and skills of the technicians doing the testing. It is also the reality of cannabis flower having its chemical compounds distributed unevenly throughout the flower. A much better way to find the flower that appeals and provides the best effects is to get to know the “nose” or Aroma Profile of the flower you are purchasing. The “nose” provides a unique way of “feeling” the entourage mix of compounds in a cultivar that appeals to you.
Myth: There is no way to select cannabis flower with any certainty of its effects on the user.
No, a cannabis consumer can rely on the Aroma Profile or the “nose”of the flower to get familiar with the types of cultivars most appealing to that consumer.
